Bianey Garcia-D la came to the USA from Mexico at the age of 15 escaping trans-phobia.
At 19, she started working to educate the LGBT community on STD prevention. After a bad experience with the NYPD, she joined MAKE THE ROAD to broaden her work to fight discrimination, increase health education and LGBT rights awareness, and to build leadership capacity within the LGBT community. She is also organizer of “The Trans-Latina March” in Jackson Heights: the largest annual event focusing on Trans visibility. Bianey uses her personal story as fuel to light the fire for others to help in her life work of combating discrimination. “My leadership mantra (mi lema) is I didn’t choose to be an activist, injustice pushed me.”
Sheltering Arms NY helps high need kids and families break cycles of abuse, neglect, or poverty so they can achieve their greatest potential through expert education, youth development, and health care programs. The organization serves 24,000 New Yorkers per year at 45+ sites throughout the city and have been doing it since 1831. At every stage of the City's history - from Abolition to The Civil Rights Movement and from Ellis Island immigration to the fight for LGBT equality and justice, the organization has been a champion for marginalized people and a platform for youth and families to express their voices and flex their power in NYC.
“We’re proud and grateful for the opportunity to support Queens Pride as Grand Marshall because we know it is a great avenue to reach more LGBT youth, more immigrant youth, and more Queens families of all beliefs and backgrounds. We’re letting them know we stand with them in advocating for peace, equality, and justice. We’re letting youth know they have a safe place here to discover their potential and understand their sexuality in a healthy way, without the fear of violence, abuse or neglect. It’s just one of the ways we’re honoring our legacy in Queens, where our programs were originally founded as the Queensborough Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children back in 1919. We’re just as committed to children now as we were then, and we look forward to celebrating progress and possibilities with children and families at this year’s parade.” – Elizabeth McCarthy, CEO of Sheltering Arms.
Thomas P. DiNapoli was first elected to as New York State Comptroller in February of 2007, and overwhelmingly re-elected in 2014. He continues to serve ALL New Yorkers equally and fairly. His record of public service to the people of New York State is known for his fiscal intelligence and for an elected official who, quote he, “will continue to go to work every day striving to do right by all New Yorkers.” We are very honored to have a government official as a Grand Marshal who not only comes from our very own city, but is an example of what “representation of all the people” is all about.
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam are one of the most musically diverse and successful recording acts of the '80s. Their million-selling hits with dance-based tracks ("I Wonder if I Take You Home"), beautiful ballads ("All Cried Out"), and unabashed pop tunes ("Head to Toe," "Lost in Emotion") are still played in clubs today. They were one of the early exponents of what later became hip-hop R&B. With five gold singles, two number one singles on both the R&B and the pop charts, two platinum albums, and inclusions on various compilations and movie soundtracks, Queens Pride is honored to have Lisa Lisa as our 2017 headliner!
